Delta variant causes worldwide wave of virus, WHO warns
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, said a global increase in Covid-19 cases has had a disparate impact on poorer countries with lower vaccination rates, and that deaths in Africa have increased by 80% in four weeks.
When will the pandemic end? My response was that the pandemic will end when the world chooses to end it. It’s in our hands. Almost four million cases were reported to WHO last week. And on current trends, we expect the total number of cases to exceed 200 million in the next two weeks. And we know that’s an understatement. On average, in five of the six WHO regions, infections have increased by 80 percent, or nearly doubled in the past four weeks. In Africa, deaths have increased by 80% over the same period. Much of this increase is due to the highly transmissible Delta variant. Which has now been detected in at least 132 countries. Hard-earned gains are threatened or lost. And the health systems of many countries are overwhelmed.
