“We have found the person we believe is responsible and we are with him right now and that is all I can say about the suspect,” Faris said.
The AP and a local newspaper identified the shooter as former NFL player Phillip Adams. Authorities, however, have not confirmed the identity or whether the shooter is dead or alive. The AP reported that Adams’ family lives near the victims and that Dr Lesslie had already treated him.
The newspaper, citing “police sources”, said police believed Adams had committed suicide after surrounding the house he was in.
The South Carolina shooting also came hours before President Joe Biden unveiled a list of executive actions aimed at reducing gun violence, as it has more and more called Congress to pass more durable legislation.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed two gun control bills in March, but they face an uphill battle in the Senate, where Democrats would need the support of 10 Republicans.
‘One of those people everyone knows’
Authorities said MPs were called at around 4:45 a.m. local time (8:45 p.m. GMT) to the Lesslies’ home in the Rock Hill area on Wednesday and spent hours searching for the suspect before finding him at a nearby house .
“Dr. Lesslie was my doctor growing up,” Faris said. “Dr. Lesslie is one of those people that everyone knows. He founded Riverview Medical Center in Rock Hill and has been a Rock Hill staple for years.
A biographical page from Dr Lesslie said he and his wife, 35, had raised four children. He had practiced medicine in Rock Hill since 1981, according to the Riverview website. He graduated from the University of Medicine of South Carolina and worked in the area surrounding Rock Hill and in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Rock Hill is a town in the far north of South Carolina, about 40 kilometers southwest of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Authorities said the investigation was continuing.
